The 29th Annual ESSENCE Festival of Culture kicked off in NOLA

The 2023 ESSENCE Festival of Culture kicked off in New Orleans on Thursday – the first of four days full of celebration, education, live music and nonstop joy!

ABOUT ESSENCE FESTIVAL

ESSENCE Festival of Culture™ Presented by Coca-Cola® officially kicked off its 29th annual celebration in New Orleans yesterday. ESSENCE Festival is the nation’s largest festival by per-day attendance. The four-day event combines showstopping music performances with can’t-miss inspirational speakers – conversations about everything from wellness to economic development to politics to film to beauty.

DAY ONE OF ESSENCE FEST

Day one of the 2023 ESSENCE Festival of Culture™ presented by Coca-Cola® kicked off with Mayor LaToya Cantrell of New Orleans and ESSENCE Ventures President & CEO Caroline Wanga and the executive leadership team. “Last year…over 176,000 attended per day, over 500,000 visitors. Make no mistake the economic impact on our city,” New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell stated during Thursday morning’s press conference. “Over 300 million directly impacted…the small businesses, the backbone of our city…being able to activate them in ways that we haven’t seen before.”

Hakeem Holmes, the newly appointed VP of the ESSENCE Festival (and a fellow New Orleans native), shared that they will be paying tribute to deceased New Orleans rappers during this weekend’s Evening Concert Series. On Friday, they will honor 5th Ward Weebie, Soulja Slim on Saturday, and Magnolia Shorty on Sunday.

After the press conference, the celebrations continued throughout the day with the Global Black Economic Forum™, which featured an invite-only Access and Opportunity Summit. Following the Summit, the 2023 Essence Ventures Media Upfront took place at The Fillmore. There was a panel discussion, as well as a special musical performance by Robin Thicke.
